Synopsis
“Zerda and the Songs of Forgetting” is a multilayered, poetic essay film that recycles archival newsreels shot in the French colonies of North Africa. Out of these colonial artifacts, Djebar recuperates the history of the Zerda festival – a merrymaking tradition indigenous to North Africa – suggesting that the power and mysticism of this ceremony is obliterated by the voyeurism of the colonial gaze. Submitted to the 1983 Berlin International Film Festival, the documentary won the title for Best Historical Film. The original copy has since vanished, with this sole remaining copy restored and digitized by the Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art in Berlin.

“Zerda i pjesme zaborava” je višeslojni, poetski esejistički film koji koristi arhivske vijesti snimane u francuskim kolonijama Sjeverne Afrike. Iz tih kolonijalnih artefakata, Djebar rekonstruira povijest festivala Zerda – tradicionalne sjevernoafričke proslave – pokazujući kako su moć i mistika ove ceremonije uništeni voajerizmom kolonijalnog upliva. Film je predstavljen na Berlinskom međunarodnom filmskom festivalu 1983. i osvojio je nagradu za Najbolji historijski film. Originalni snimak je nestao, a jedini preostali primjerak restauriran je i digitaliziran od strane Arsenala – Instituta za filmsku i video umjetnost u Berlinu.
Directors Biography
Assia Djebar (1936–2015) was one of the most prominent figures in North African literature, publishing numerous novels and essays that highlight the role of women in their intertwined struggle against colonialism and patriarchy. Djebar took a ten-year hiatus from writing midway through her prolific career to produce two documentary films: “The Nouba of the Women of Mount Chenoua” (1977) and “The Zerda or the Songs of Forgetting” (1982).
